This morning, during my Peristeen irrigation I used 4 full pumps of air. I had just finished pumping in 1,000ml of water when I experienced a very strong contraction. Very much to my surprise the entire inflated balloon was ejected. It did not pop and was fully inflated. I was surprised at how large...

NW-Will, thanks for the feedback about the air pumps. It is good to know that I am not the only one who has noticed this. Perhaps Coloplast should mention something about it in their instructional materials.

Making it down to 8 digistims from what you were doing is, indeed, an improvement....

While experimenting to find how to reduce the number of popped rectal catheter balloons I have experienced, I may have stumbled on something of interest.

Somewhat to my surprise, I have learned that all squeezes of the pump to inflate the catheter balloon cuff are not the same. By this,...

Thanks, that helps me better understand what you are doing. Of course, there still will be differences in our methods - i.e., how much water we use, how many pumps of air we use once the catheter is inserted, etc.. These may affect the frequency of popped balloons. It appears that I will be doing...

NW-Will, that is good news about Enemeez being covered by Medicaid. I would not have expected that, as it is available OTC.

Your excitement about "stuff" is shared by most who have to deal fecal incontinence, not just those who are SCI.

    My co-author (on a draft...

Today is my 50th day of using Peristeen. I have gone all 50 days without experiencing a single bowel accident! Well done Peristeen.

Unfortunately, after a good period without any balloon pops, I have had several pops. These were with 4 pumps of air, pumping water slowly (once every four...

NW-Will, that is great news about your progress with the digistims. Every little thing helps. I understand what you mean about the difficulty sometimes of getting everything out. Does your agility permit you to use a gloved finger or are you using a digistim device?

    May I ask how long...

Today is my 40th day to use Peristeen irrigation and I am very pleased to report that I have gone all 40 days without a bowel accident. From this point onward, even if I experience the occasional accident, I would consider my use of the Peristeen device to have been highly successful.

    Guys (and gals),

Several of us have commented on the problem of Peristeen rectal catheter balloons popping.

I seem to have found found one simple way (at least for me) to reduce the number of balloons that pop - BREATHE.

    Yes, simply breathe.

    I noticed...

    NW-Will,

Pardon me for noting it, but that seems to be an excessive number of digistims.

I am amazed that you were able to get so many uses out of a rectal catheter. Impressive.

Since I posted the previous, my medical supply house has contacted me and deleted...

How do you guys/gals manage used rectal catheters that you intend to reuse?

After use, I inflate the used catheter one pump and then wash the inflated balloon with mild soap and warm water. I then blot the surface dry with a tissue and deflate the balloon. I thoroughly dry the clean used...

My insurance company sent me some estimates of my co-pay for the Peristeen system and it is much higher than what I had expected. Our discussion on re-using of rectal catheters is no longer just a theoretical for me as I may need to reuse them several times each in order to continue irrigating each...

SlowItUp, would just one more pump of air for the balloon help? I started using three and that did not work for me and the catheter popped out As I mentioned, I now begin with four and sometimes have to add a fifth pump of air when I have a pumped in a couple of hundred cc's of water. I must begin...
