    Off-road chair, tax deduction

Looking ahead to next tax season...I bought an off-road wheelchair (extreme x8). Would that be considered a 'medical expense'?

If anything, call it a ergonomic medical device if there are any hastle with a deduction.

I was told it needed an Rx to write it off. However, I'd write it off anyway. Maybe sweet talk a doc for an Rx even if insurance won't pay.

Be careful. The IRS may go by Medicare guidelines between what is a medically necessary mobility aid (covered) and one that is considered recreational (not covered)

Would that also apply to things typically denied by insurance, and out-of-pocket, such as a seat elevator, shower chair, etc...

Another “catch”, is that medical deductions in the US only begin for medical expenses that exceed 7.5% of gross adjusted income.

And change your verbiage when asking questions. "I have a friend that is thinking about purchasing a widget." Applies to many other areas too, especially when speaking to the government and people in positions of power
