  • Handcycle as a medical expense on taxes?

Has anyone successfully claimed a handcycle as a medical expense on your taxes? If so what documentation is required?

You can only deduct medical expenses if they exceed 10% of your adjusted gross income. (unless you were born before 1950 then its 7/5%)

You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for a wheelchair used mainly for the relief of sickness or disability, and not just to provide transportation to and from work. The cost of operating and maintaining the wheelchair is also a medical expense.
However, you can deduct "medical expenses" which are defined (partly) as

Medical expenses are the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, and the costs for treatments affecting any part or function of the body.
If you for example you got a letter from your doctor stating you needed a handcycle to mitigate your neuropathic pain then you would survive the audit. If you said you got the wheelchair for just general exercise you most likely wouldn't.

easy justification - just have the letter mention cardiovascular endurance, lung capacity, upper body strength for prevention of injuries, etc. But as stated, don't bother unless all of your medical expenses added up gets you to 10%
