Would anyone know if the VA has approved the Peristeen system? I believe that I remember our SCI Hall of famer Ms. Dunn, mentioning something regarding the catheter's failure, holding up it's approval. Considerable time has passed since then and it would be wonderful for a number of us and the entire VA system if injured folks could use it.

Coloplast will only supply after you have been trained by one of their certified RNs. They are busy training outpatient & inpatient RNs at larger non-VA rehab centers now.

Why is all the training required for what's basically an enema? I've been using this for a few months and it's a pretty simple concept - up your butt, pump balloon 3 times, pump in water, remove balloon, poop.Comment

I've actually been more afraid of using some of the items Stephen has talked about in the past that I purchased from Optimal Health Network. The peristeen can be a bit finicky sometimes and I'm getting closer and closer to trying those options out.Comment

I returned to using the Peristeen more than a year ago after a friend tried and failed to get results with it. He had leftover (unused) supplies and gave them to me. I'm now getting them through my insurance.
I didn't go through the training program, after all I've been using the product everyday for a long time and had my doc write this on Coloplast's order form. There are potential risks using the Peristeen for someone with SCI, but they're common to using any type of enema. I would think the primary health concern is triggering autonomic dysreflexia if the bowel is over-filled, and users susceptible to AD likely have different thresholds for when that might kick in.Comment

Steve, that's good to know. I've been purchasing them myself for the past few months. The insurance route sounds like something I should look into. Since you've tried both, do you find the Peristeen easier to use than the OHN options? The only real complaint I have with the Peristeen is that they seem to be overly cautious with back pressure and sometimes I have trouble getting the thing to do anything but whistle at me. I know it's due to some kind of blockage (gas, mild constipation) but sometimes I wish it had a bit more push.
Where do you get your Peristeen supplies from that will accept your insurance?Comment

The biggest selling feature of the Peristeen vs. the OHN supplies is the rectal cuff catheter. Being able to eliminate (or at least greatly reduce) having the water leak out as you're filling up is a big plus. (OHN does offer an rectal cuff catheter, but I never tried it.) Other than that, once your bowel is filled with water it doesn't make a difference how you filled it, Peristeen or regular enema.Originally posted by Davey View PostSteve, that's good to know. I experience the same high-pitched whistling sound from the bag lid when I'm filling. It takes about a minute or two to fill the bowel (1 liter) -- approx. 100 pumps -- so the whistling doesn't bother me too much.
Other notes: I keep the bag in the sink next to the toilet rather than on the floor. Once my bowel is filled, I will wait a few minutes for things to get started on their own, but I do a lot of dig stim and abdominal massage to expedite things. After I fill my bowel, I will flush the toilet to rinse off the catheter and then I place it temporarily in the trash can. I wash it afterward. I find that I can get many days' worth (sometimes close to 2 weeks) of service from one catheter, which is the most expensive part of the system.

I re-use my catheters too. Each one lasts me about a month before it pops (has only happened twice) or I decide it's time for a new one. Speaking of the OHN rectal cuff catheter, I purchased one of those things and there's no way I would have ever used it. It almost looks like there's a balloon that is attached to the catheter with dental floss that's been glued together. While I was un-packaging it, it actually cut my finger - ouch!

Any update regarding the VA and Peristeen? I need to try and start using the one I purchased a couple of years ago but I need a new bag and some catheters. Where are folks buying the replacement bags and such.
I noticed that they have a new style catheter which is much more expensive. Do these fit the same as the blue ones?C 5/6 Comp.

Get hold of Peristeen. They will be able to tell you if they are VA approved and the contract numbers to tell your primary to order.
If Chasmengr is still on here he is pretty sharp with that stuff.Comment

They are now on VA contract, but are pretty slow in rolling out to VA facilities, including SCI Centers. There is still a requirement (from the FDA) that they only be prescribed by providers who, and training provided by nurses who, have completed the Coloplast training program on the Peristeen. So not just any VA provider can order them for you...
