  • Question about TM and Shingles

There is a conversation ongoing in my TM support group on Facebook.....
The question is......does just having TM increase a persons chance of developing the Shingles..???
I would think not because from all that I have read, I understand that Shingles are brought on by the virus that is left from having Chickenpox.
I don't see how having TM could increase the chance of developing Shingles....
    Any input..????
    Thanks...!!

Well, actually, since TM is currently considered to be an autoimmune disease (as is MS) this may make you more prone to developing shingles, as it can flare up anytime the immune system is challenged. Best to get the shingles vaccine, esp. once you are over the age of 60, or if you have ever had shingles in the past. It reduces your risk for getting shingles by about 85%.

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.
