Free energy devices based on magnets have always been revealed as hoaxes. It's been attempted so many times throughout history, it's amazing how much hype this particular "invention" has enjoyed.

The only mechanisms I've ever read of that might have any hope of producing "free energy" are ones based on the Casimir Effect. I read somewhere that scientists have already envisioned devices that could produce energy based on this phenomenon, but the amounts are infinitesimal. Still, a fascinating read for the armchair physicist.
