The junk acted on the endocanabinoid system, but is lethal. Cannabis does too, but never hurt anyone.

That link next links to an article in French, which contains a small paragraph in English. The paragraph reads:
      "January 15th, 2016 - Rennes, France
      Message from Biotrial
During a FIM study which was being conducted for a sponsor, serious adverse advents related to the test drug have occurred in some subjects at our CPU. The trial has been conducted in full compliance with the international regulations and Biotrial's procedures were followed at every stage throughout the trial, in particular the emergency procedures for the transfer of subjects to the hospital. We are in close and regular contact with the Health Authorities and Ministry in France. The priority at Biotrial remains the safety of our subjects. We are very grateful for the support we have been receiving from our clients and partners today."

They didn't give the name of the drug they were testing, but way back in 2011, scientists already knew that the synthetic cannabinoids were toxic and made people sick.

"Spice” is an umbrella term for a variety of synthetic cannabinoid products whose inhalation has been associated with an increasing number of toxic side effects resulting in emergency department visits..."
