Thankfully, I never had the need to experience Costa Rican medical care first hand. However, I have friends who have lived there more than a decade who have high praise for the health care system.

I would caution you that many of the rural areas are quite remote because of the undeveloped roads. Specialists familiar with SCI are difficult to find anywhere, even large US cities.

Where in CR are you going? What are your interests? I don't know much about the prostitution and gambling - the two most popular legal attractions for American males.

BTW - I had trouble with TACA Airlines not bringing my chair to the aircraft, making me board LAST, etc. I filed a complaint with the FAA, three of my five complaints were upheld. Hopefully, that means that they made some policy changes.

If you need hospitalization or health care, stick to San Jose. It gets a lot iffier once you get out into the countryside.

There are tour groups that specialize in tours for those in chairs if you are interested. There have been some posts about this on the Disabled Cruising board at www.cruisecritic.com

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.

I had the same problems with them as recent as a couple of years ago. Their basic knowledge of service to disabled passengers is non-existent. Be prepared and ask for everything in advance, and twice. Be redundant.

San Jose is cool, but keep your wits about you.

Yeah, tourists can gamble and whore, and many go there just for that reason. I'm sure that a man can hook-up with a transvestite knowingly or by deception. But there are many females.

I spent most of my time in the sticks doing ecotourism (birds, bugs, plants) and killing fish.

                    Have fun.

hola mad P, i happened to have lived in CR from 03-05 and in nicaragua as well, all prior to my jan. 06 SCI which also happened to have occured in playa hermosa, CR. the hospital i recieved my surgery, titanium, and 2 weeks of therapy at was in San Jose. CIMA hospital which is affiliated with Baylor university in Texas. it was an amazing, amazing facility. the surgery was better than would have been performed in the US, the food was great, the therapist chicks were soooo hot and were really women, and the docs were very kind and knowledgable, and all for a quarter of the cost. i would contact them if you are in need of a care giver, i know they told me that their therapists are for private hire at a very very good rate (the whores are way more expensive and most likely tranis) i know the therapy director was named Eugenia, and she and most therapists spoke english, although the chicks dig a gringo who can speak the language. San Jose is the place to find any help, outside of there, you are going to only find the local red cross and shady public hospitals. bring your beach chair and have fun.
