I've been looking for an accessible apartment to rent for six months to a year in Madrid, Spain, but I've had no luck finding anything available. Anybody have any experience getting a place out there?

I have no first hand knowledge. Why Madrid? If you have flexibility, have you looked at Barcelona? They held the para-Olympics quite a few years ago and I heard they made a big effort to make the city accessible. Having been to Madrid within the past six months, I’m not surprised it is so hard to find an accessible apartment. It’s a very hilly, old city. Apartments and businesses are cramped and square footage (meterage?) comes at a premium.
Just from rolling around the city for a few days I’d bet that 90% of buildings don’t have an elevator and of the 10% that do, the majority have steps to get into the building or to the elevator.

I have friends from Norway, both who have SCI, who spend their winters in the south coast of Spain. They have been able to find pretty accessible condos or apartments to rent or lease which are in resort areas and newer construction. If you don't need to be right in the heart of Madrid, I would look further out in the suburbs, or in resort areas on the coast. FYI, I finally found a good website with several accessible apartments. Many are labeled "accessible" but are not completely, but after sifting through a lot I was able to find more here than anywhere else.
