    NYC Hotels

    Hello all, my name is James R. I am a T6 complete Para, in need of some hotel suggestions in the Queens, Manhattan area. My main problem is the toilet situation, because I need one when I am sitting on the toilet, the grab bar is to the left of me. I have called about 8 hotels so far requesting pictures. Either the representative has no idea what I am asking for, or they say yes they have my accommodations. Then when I demand pictures, it is nothing of what I need. I almost could care less if they don't have a bed. Going to the restroom is important lol. Feel free to ask me any questions you need to.

    P.S. I was searching for the apparelyzed forums and was sad when I couldn't find. Glad I found this though.

    So when you calling "asking for pictures" Who are you talking with?

    remember that is not a question (what side is the grab bar on ?) the reservation center would be able to answer you would have to call the hotel direct and ask for a manager or GM

    If you message me I can give you some tips on how to find out.

      I sent you a private message, but I will also reply here for other people. I usually speak to reservations and they transfer me to the front desk. I 1st ask if I can have pictures of the handicap stall. If they hesitate or say no, then I explain why I need them. Just a few times the front desk has asked me to speak with the manager or GM. When they transfer me, no one picks up and I have to leave a voice mail. To which I never get a response.

      I have taken the word of a few hotel reps who say when I am sitting on the toilet, the grab bar would be to my left. When I get to the hotel, 1 hotel didn't even have a single grab bar. The others, the grab bar was on the other side, or not even close to the toilet.

        It's reasons like this that I find it paramount for us to adapt to what's around us, as opposed to the other. Now, I certainly don't know your situation, but why is that so important? What would happen if you just dealt with it? Could you just figure it out?
        I'm not suggesting anything negative here, I'm just throwing it out there in case it helps think outside the box.

          I got your message and will also do both. 1st assume your the 1st person with a disability they have ever dealt with and go from there not everyone understands our needs and why...Always call the hotel direct so you know your talking to the hotel. Dont talk to the front desk because there turn over is high and you may gets someone new that just started of you deal with a person who may not be there when you arrive.

          Talk to the manager and just explain...this is my disability and this is what my needs are and why.

          It will put them in a less threatening position to help. Once they come up with a solution ask them if they can send someone up when the room is vacant to take pictures and text or email them to you.

          Let them know that you have had concerns in the past and only you can really tell if a room is going to work for you and the pictures help this process.

          Once you get to the point of getting a room have that manager book the room and hold it. Also this back and forth communications with that person builds rapport and when you arrive they can put a face with the communication and in our case it really opens the door.

          We have had some amazing results from major upgrades to bottles of wine, room service etc just thanking us.

          Remember once you get to the hotel make an effort to meet and thank them if the room works out.

          We go to New York at the end of the summer and we checked are past pictures and hotels that did have the grab bars on the left included but remember these are room specific.

            The reason it is so important for me, is because of my bowel program. I have always leaned left to right and never once the other way. I could adapt by practicing doing it the other way, but here lies the problem. My house is set up with the bar on the left. I have no way of practicing. I even have a portable grab bar that I bring with me, but the hotels that don't have grab bars, usually have sinks to the right of the toilet.

              Thank you for the info. The next time I call a hotel, I will just start by requesting to speak to the manager. Explain my situation and what I need. Thanks for the tips and the hotel suggestions. I am going to start off by asking the hotels you suggested. I need to practice my process lol.

                We use the portable grab bars that bolt to the toilet seat hardware. You can use both bars or one bar. Each bar can be broken down into 2 pieces which might fit in your luggage. Then as long as the toilet seat had standard hardware you could use anywhere.

                      I would stick with the hotel accommodating you...one less thing to have to pack and or set up...
