  • Medtronic Baclofen Pump lawsuit

What do you all make of this:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/...0XO2D220150427

"Medtronic, the world's largest standalone medical device maker, has agreed to stop manufacturing and distributing the SynchroMed pumps except in extraordinary cases where a physician certifies the product is medically necessary for treatment."

I'm a bit baffled by this line. Who else would be getting a pump except those whom a physician had certified it as being medically necessary? This feels like a slap-on-the-wrist kind of thing, if that's the kind of teeth the government brought out.

I had one of these pumps put int about two years ago. Life is much improved with it, but reading about their quality control issues is scary. And what happens when the battery dies on this one? Will I have any trouble finding a new one, or is there a competing device from another manufacturer that I could look into?

Mmmmm. Not liking this. I think though that if a necessity, which I Think many of us are, they will
Make them. there is another IT pump manufacturer, Prometra.

has this caused fatalities ? no mention of the effect on the patients, and super poor quality control usually becomes apparent when they are investigating fatalities from the pumps

This is why I did not get one

Is it a software issue? There are no requirements for software quality for medical devices!

See also Therac-25 and Toyota. These things are junk.
