    Pain meds in baclofen pump

Has this worked / not worked for anyone here. Experiences are greatly appreciated!

I have a baclofen pump and my PM Dr. has told me if I want he'll put some pain meds in my pump on my next refill. However, I thought oral meds might be better, I'm worried about tolerance, addiction, and effectivness.

    Hey dgrotz,

I've had a Metronic baclofen pump since January 2008. It took a lot of fine tuning and I felt like driving off the bridge on the way to my appointments a couple of times but they did get it finally right. I have a mixture of baclofen, morphine, and clonidine for the "burning." I also have a PSO machine were I can give myself a bolus 4x's per day if needed which I usually take. I'm a C6-C7 Incomplete sci that is ambulatory, holds down a full-time job, and can do most things except running a marathon (which I could never do before anyways). Hope this helps? Maybe we can share stories about our pumps. It's not perfect for some reason and I will have a week or so every 3-months were I'm in pain and nothing helps, Lyrica, Neuortin, oxcarbazepine, etc... Good luck and Happy New Year!

I've had mine since November 07 and used just baclofen so far, it's been great. It's that week of withdrawl before my refill that I don't know I could take. I will PM you sometime, the rose bowl is coming on soon so it might not be right away.

I have the actual withdrawl right before my refill. They would give me narcotics even though it does take the edge off a little. It's interesting to know that you go through the same problem w/your pump. They keep on pushing neuropathic medication but it doesn't work and they're not helping. The week is hell on earth! I'm sure you know.

I've been there tried that with everything from morphing to Dilauded with it having somewhat beneficial results, the only problem being is that I got used to it so fast, I was turning it up every two or three weeks eventually leaving me in a haze all the time and commonly dropping off in the middle of conversations. The biggest thing I do to help bring the pain down some is quit smoking, besides that I've just learned to live with it. But then again, it might have very beneficial results for you.

My pump works great with just baclofen, I do not experience any withdrawl now. I have read both of you's past post very closly and have come to the conclusion oral meds may be better for me.

I would agree. If your pump had some morphine in it and you were not responding w/pain relief then I would say, oral medications probably won't work but that's not the case for you. Oral medications to treat either neuopathic pain syndrome or just mechanical pain might do the trick. Good luck my friend! Happy New Year. Did your college tream win?
