    muscle spasms?

My brother has a c5-c6 injury been getting muscle spasms below his injury site (both legs rotating outward along with his diaphram contracting @ the same time). Whats happening and does this mean anything?

    Thanks in advance

Muscle spasms and spasticity (hypertonicity) of the muscles is common below the SCI. Most people with SCI have them. The do not indicate any return or greater chance of return. They usually increase as spinal shock subsides. If they are enough to interfere with function, safety or hygiene, then medications may be needed to control them. Regular daily stretching and standing can help to control them as well.
