Welcome aboard Liz, and happy 1st anniversary. I celebrated my first anniversary when I was 17 in 1973! Just celebrated 48 last month. ThemBones stated it perfectly above, but I'll add, find a hobby you can do in your chair, whether it's photography, skiing, basketball, whatever. The interactions and confidence you'll get from sports is tremendous. But otherwise, pursue your dreams, work, date, just live life but you'll have to do it differently. Take care of your butt and stay positive.

Happy birthday Liz
Them Bones said wise words, DeadEye too. The Desiderata for those in wheelchairs? Hey, it all applies.
My journey to this club was an evolution courtesy of a large AVM in my lower spine.
I have found that the important thing in this life, as in the earlier one, is respect, love and friends. For yourself and for others.
This site and the community is brilliant. Reach out when you need to, and offer your wisdom and experience too.
Keep a sense of humour.
You will do OK.Last edited by slow_runner; 13 Jul 2020, 9:01 AM.

Welcome to the community. It is a great place to learn and also to vent. Feel free to visit often and to post questions and responses. It helps to know that there are others around who have or are going through similar things. Remember, as Forest Gump said "life is like a box of chocolates". ckfThe SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.

Welcome to carecure, the place to get info to make you an expert on living life from a 4 feet tall perspective. I was born and raised in Newport, lived in Morristown, Bean Station, Mooresburg, since about 1998 when I moved back to TN. Moved to the remote desert in sw TX in early 2018. Off grid. There is another dude lives out here near me with a sci. Search old threads for needed info. Ask questions. My first few years were rough, until I figured it out on my own and got back to living. Then I found this site and REALLY learned how to go back to having an enjoyable life. My handcycle made a WORLD of difference, got me healthy and happy. Exercise and a plant based diet is where it's at. Get out there and live a normal life, you now have an advantage, you can roll fast, downhill, without effort.

Liz,
There has already been a lot of great advice provided. I am coming up on my 42nd anniversary and I strongly encourage:- 1. Follow what you are passionate about, if you get someone to pay you for your passion that is the dream.
- 2. Find your local (closest) Center for Independent Living, https://www.ilru.org/projects/cil-ne...tion-directory, CILs are consumer directed and community based. They can connect you with various resources to help you live as independently as you choose.

Liz- The search function, once you learn to use it, will open up (I think) 20 years of posts on all sorts of topics and experiences. So you do not have to wait around for an answer to a question- most likely it has been answered before.
My anniversary (14) is on our wedding anniversary, so I never forget. Imagine my poor hubby pulling over on the way to work to be told, on his 3rd anniversary, that his wife has bern in an accident and he'd better get there stat. Ugh.
