    College Scholarships or Grants?

Has anyone researched availability of scholarships or grants for folks with disabilities? I glanced over the forums, thinking I might save time, but did not find anything. I thought Carecure had an Education section.

Yes, I live in Louisiana and we have a program called Louisiana Rehabiliitation Services and if you apply you are approved and they will pay for your tuition, books, gas to get to and from school, room and board, and I think that's it. You have to be a full-time student in order to get this and obey their rules. Like Liz said, check with your Vocational rehab.

I just asked my mom and i showed her the site, and she said we already went through all of those.

My OVR lady also told us, if we give you anything, as soon as you get money, you have to pay us back. Meaning if i get off disability, i'm in debt still, i just owe it to a different person. Is this the case or is she making this up?

Also the lack of funding is still there, even if its "state wide" all they do is allocate money to the county your in, if you don't have alot of disabiled people in your county then the state doesn't give your county any money.

Did anyone else hear about you having to pay back the money you get from them?

                    Dale,

It is an interesting idea, to have an Education/School forum. Is there general interest from people about this? I am adding a poll to find out.

                    Wise.

                        No.

I was injured @ 25 years ago and still have VR "pay" for van adaptations.

VR paid all my tuition/room/board/aides for a BA
room/board/aide and 1/2 tuition for MA

You need another counselor or to speak to a supervisor at the state level.

I don't think we need another forum. There are so many already it is confusing to new members.

Instead, I think the Life forum is the place we have traditionally discussed both work and education issues, and this could continue. If we do have a new forum, I would combine these two.

It would be helpful if people put good resource links in our Web Links forum, which gets only minimal use.

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.

                            I voted yes.
Seeing as a lot of SCIs are pretty young and at the start of things, I think it would be a good idea.
If you can have a forum for computers (yes, I know that is an integral part of most SCIs lives) then I would think Education/School warrants one too.

                              Thanks Liz,

Do you currently have a job and off of disablitiy right now? I'm assuming yes, but i have to make sure so I have my facts right.

I'm on medical assistance right now, i'm not on medicare. I didn't have enough money to pay into my SSD, so i'm geting SSI because I got hurt when I was 19. Right now i'm about a year 1/2 post, it will be 2 years in October.

If you don't mind could you tell me your situation (maybe in a PM if u don't feel comfortable), so I can figure out why my situation is so different. Thanks!
