  • Poetry by Pablo Neruda

I read this poem in spanish and thought of translating it to English for those who don't read Spanish. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did and that it did not lose much in the translation.

    If I Die

If I die, survive me with such sheer force
that you awaken the furies of the pallid and the cold,
from south to south lift your indelible eyes,
from sun to sun dream through your singing mouth.
I don't want your laughter or your steps to waver,
I don't want my heritage of joy to die.
Don't call up my person. I am absent.
Live in my absence as if in a house.
Absence is a house so vast
that inside you will pass through its walls
and hang pictures on the air
Absence is a house so transparent
that I, lifeless, will see you, living,
and if you suffer, my love, I will die again.

    Pablo Neruda

    Translated: Raven

    Raven
Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. ~Victor Hugo~

but one who keeps on fighting to the end ~ Unknown ~

Thanks for doing the translation; it's a thoughtful and passionate poem with beautiful imagery.

That was such a nice peom.

Absence is a house so transparent
that I, lifeless, will see you, living,
and if you suffer, my love, I will die again.
These lines convey very powerful emotions. Reading these lines makes one really stop, think and feel the love the poet has in the heart for the person for whom this poem has been written - truly undying and unending love. Great.

Thanks Raven for translating the poem to English and sharing it with us.

          Dear raven

it would be ideal if you could communicate with me outside of this forum so that your real name can give me permission! my web site is www.helenchadwick.com

          all good wishes Helen

Sorry that I had not seen your replies. My apologies. Am glad that you all were able to enjoy the translation. Neruda's poetry is beautiful and shows so much emotion and passion. I love to also read a lot of spanish poetry. Later on I will try to translate some other's poetry in spanish and attempt not to lose much of it in the translation.

Helen, I will be getting in touch with you as you have requested. I imagine the song must be beautiful just as the poem is.
