    ELYRIA, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 2002--

New Center-Wheel Drive Power Wheelchair Incorporates Five Technologies
Designed to Create a Total Driving Experience for the Consumer
Invacare Corporation (NYSE:IVC) today announced the company has received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration on its new center-wheel drive power wheelchair, the Invacare(R) Storm Series(R) TDX(TM), which will eventually replace the company's traditional rear-wheel drive power wheelchairs.

Available for sale in May 2003, the Storm Series TDX incorporates five technologies that, in combination, create a total driving experience for the consumer. It is designed to address many of the short-comings of traditional rear, front and mid-wheel drive power wheelchairs, while offering all the custom rehab options required by power wheelchair consumers.

"When developing the new Storm Series TDX, we literally spent hundreds of hours talking with consumers until we were confident that we understood their `real world' needs," said Hymie Pogir, vice president of marketing for custom power products. "We then closed the loop with rehab professionals. The resulting message was clear - a dimensional change was needed in power wheelchair maneuverability, terrain capability, smoothness in ride, and power, all delivered in a beautifully, aesthetic package.

"In addition, these performance features had to be compatible with the requirements of a highly configurable rehab product, including powered and custom seating options and specialty electronics," explained Pogir. "The TDX absolutely meets and exceeds all of these expectations by combining leading-edge technologies not available in any other power wheelchair on the market. Most importantly, I believe the TDX is going to revolutionize the lifestyle expectations of power wheelchair consumers."

    The Storm TDX technologies are:

Center wheel drive, which offers the tightest turning radius possible for superior maneuverability, and intuitive driving compared to all other configurations of power wheelchairs currently available on the market today, including rear-wheel drive and front-wheel drive power wheelchairs.

MK5 electronics, the next generation of electronics from Invacare, are structured to provide a simple programming process while still maintaining the industry's leading capability to individualize function and performance, which has proven so valuable in its predecessor system, the MKIV(TM) electronics.

SureStep(TM) technology, a patent-pending automatic system that ensures the consumer driving the chair can handle everyday obstacles and thresholds encountered, up to three-inches. SureStep gives the chair flexibility that enables it to traverse varying surfaces elegantly and safely. In addition, SureStep technology allows all six wheels of the chair to remain in contact with the ground to maximize performance, improve stability and enhance comfort for the consumer.

Stability lock, a patent-pending technology that ensures the chair remains stable without the "tippiness" commonly associated with mid-wheel or center-wheel drive powerchairs.

TrueTrack technology, a patent-pending technology based on Invacare's Gearless-Brushless GB motor technology, accurately translates the driver's commands and helps the chair maintain the chosen direction, even on slopes, thresholds and uneven terrain.

The Storm Series TDX will be available in three models:

Storm TDX3(TM): comes standard with three of the TDX technologies - MK5, center wheel drive and SureStep.

Storm TDX4(TM): comes standard with four of the TDX technologies - MK5, center wheel drive, SureStep and Stability Lock.

Storm TDX5(TM): comes standard with all five TDX technologies - MK5, center wheel drive, SureStep, Stability Lock and TrueTrack.
