  • Do you do anything???

I had someone ask me a question the other night, which I know I've been asked on numerous occasions. "Do you do anything?" Instead of asking where I work, it was Do you do anything? As I've said, I've been asked this before, but this time it either hit me wrong or I heard it for what it was. I guess if you see someone in a wheelchair, they possibly can't be a productive member of society.

    Rant over.
Stupidity ain't illegal, but it sure is inconvenient.

Workout, ride my handcycle, have a large woodshop, lead a 20t member ukulele group for local gigs, mentor new injuries and then in the afternoon I get really busy and....

Sure. I do a lot. Here is something to think about. I am in the process of buying a zero-turn lawn mower. Well, to all of the people who think we not do anything, I have told my family, because of their lack of knowledge, MY WHEELCHAIR IS ZERO-TURN. So driving zero-turn lawn mower, I have had far more practice than you can ever imagine. If you want me to calculate the number of hours practice, just let me know.

Hey, unfortunate truth is some higher SCIs can't even do those things, (yes even sleep, especially sleep its hard for some that have to sleep in one position, not to mention AD, spasms, nerve pain etc). Bad examples (especially with sarcasm) all I'am saying.

I've never had anyone ask me that question, but I'd hope I could come up with a smart ass answer at the time, like "Yo mama"

If asked, I’d simply reply with the truth: “I suffer full time” , “In fact, I’m on 2 and a half shifts per day, 7 days,”.

You could go all Zen on him and say "I am pure awareness in stillness, there is nothing to do and no where to go but be here now, .....how about you?".

My answer would be: I try to educate people that what folks in a chair are just that. Folks - who happen to get around by wheelchair.

I tell them all the stuff I do, or did (not quite sure where I am with all this presently because my condition is degenerative): I make my living as a sculptor, and have been all over the mountains here horseback with 15 or so back country camping trips under my belt. They usually look uncomfortable at this point like they don't know whether to be jealous or feel sorry for me....they are confused.
