Parking in apartment parking for free? handicap placard

    Hi,

I was wondering if you are legally not allowed to charge people to park in a parking garage in a complex if you have a handicap placard? It sounds insane but so far 2 apartment complexes told me if you have a handicap placard we can't charge you money to park if the spot is open. If the spot isn't open then you are screwed so you have no reserved parking spot but if its open you can park there for free.

Anyone know the details on this? If I don't have to pay then it will save me $150 a month. But its strange this 1 complex said no you still have to pay and the other 2 said no they can't charge me.

If the garage is owned by the complex, then yeah they can charge you whatever they want. If it is city owned parking, then the local laws apply.

In my city I can park all day at any meter for nuttin', but sometimes have to pay in private lots. I park at the meter in those cases.

I went to portland today for a doc appt and paid for the meter When meeting a friend later for lunch just in case the laws aren't the same. Five bucks for three hours. Gah!

Parking is a racket, dont expect a break.

state/ city laws determine if you have to pay. in st. louis you have to pay for about any parking downtown because there are no handicap spots where you can take wheelchair out of car unless you want to do it in the middle of traffic

I had to either rent or purchase the parking spot in my condo complex. I chose to purchase because I plan on being here for a long time, but if I had wanted to I could have paid the monthly rate. It was worth it though because otherwise anyone could park in HP parking and I would be out of luck.

Here in Seattle we can park at any spot, handicapped or not, for free, unless it's in a private lot, then you just get to park in an accesable spot, and pay the money, but you can get out(if no a--hole parks next to you)Had that happen at the medical (doc's) jackdaw parked so's I couldn't even get wheelchair btween the vehicles. Left him a "little" surprise down the side of his newly washed car.

when I lived in San Diego area, HC parking was free. so were movie tickets for a companion to accompany a hc person. bus and trolley fair ten percent less than general fare. free companion tickets to padre games, the zoo, wild animal park, sea world scripts aquarium, knot ts berry farm and Disneyland, though some places made it available only on certain days. It used to be also that certain days to all those place were free to people under 16, or to local native schools senior citizens or low income families. so that anyone could enjoy what ever treasures the cities offer no matter the income.

I think there is a big difference between some of the city benefits extended to the disabled vs a privately owned complex. We have two HP spots for my building, but they are there for guests, not for people who live here.
