Hidden video shows Ohio cows beaten

An animal welfare group said Tuesday that a graphic video it secretly recorded shows workers at a dairy farm beating cows with crowbars, stabbing them with pitchforks and punching them in their heads.

The video was recorded in an undercover investigation at Conklin Dairy Farms Inc., said Mercy For Animals, a not-for-profit group that publicizes what it calls cruel practices in the dairy, meat and egg industries and promotes a vegan diet.

The video shows workers holding down newborn calves and stomping on their heads. It shows one worker wiring a cow's nose to a metal bar near the ground and repeatedly beating it with another bar while it bleeds.

Conklin Dairy Farms, a fourth-generation family operation based in Plain City, said it takes the care of its cows and calves very seriously and had reviewed the video.

"The video shows animal care that is clearly inconsistent with the high standards we set for our farm and its workers,() and we find...More

i just watched food inc and was in tears. this is why i only eat eggs from the little farm across the road, beef/chicken/pork from farms in the area. i can go and just sit with the animals if i want and everything is open so people can see how they are treated. it's so sad! people need to learn to respect animals more!

Having grown up on a dairy farm, it does not make sense to treat cows that way. Stressing them lowers their productivity, and certainly inflicting injury and resulting pain adds to that.

The worst our cows got were a few barks from a collie. In the barn and milking parlor, they enjoyed classical music. I am serious.

I spent some summer months growing up on my uncle's ranch. He had mostly cattle, but had about 8 milk cows, which I milked all the time. These cows were treated like family. They all had names, and lived the good life, as far as milk cows go.

That video is fucked up. The owner needs an ass whoopin.

I wonder, assuming some of those maggots have families, what do they teach to their kids about violence, animals?

I chose not to watch, but such treatment, aside from being reprehensible, immoral and probably criminal, is counterproductive and economically unsound. For at least the latter reasons, I think it is relatively rare that animals are mistreated like that.
Our small group of cattle (a herdlet?) have a good and tranquil life, right up to the end, before the transition to the freezer. Food, water and shelter are always available, and they are never scared. It only makes sense.

I did not watch. Are they beating them for enjoyment?

I live here in the area and the media is playing this over and over again. It is so hard to watch. I can not believe that it even happend let alone filmed by someone else. And the sad part is that he/they can only be charged a max of 90 days and $750 fine per cruelity charge. There is no way to be able to know how often and how many animals this happened to.

Bill always wanted a farm with cattle because he loved working with them so much ... I don't know what he would do to these guys if he could get his hands on them .... it's so senseless .... my heart is broken seeing this !
