Not being fully informed what Australian children do, I can say for sure the kids in our small town regularly turn out to help those who are less fortunate. And, this goes on all year, not just at holidays. One of our highschools mandates public service during the senior year.

As for gross commercialization, your definition of "gross" and that coming from merchants and their employees certainly differ. I am thankful for a successful Christmas buying season and for the jobs commercialization provides.

Its past midnight here, technically Christmas day so I will be charitable and only call your comparison between the social behaviour and morals of a small group of children in Smalltown USA and the whole of the Australian continent facile.

Theres no real jobs created out of spending sprees at Christmas and other commercialised occasions, in fact the social problems caused by families spending money they dont have either because of a desire to keep up with their neighbours or the embarrassment of not being able to do so far outweighs any perceived economic advantages. Most of this is credit card spending which is the last thing any country coming out of the 2nd biggest depression of the last hundred years needs.
