  • Learn to Meditate

    I did a quick search for meditation threads and really only came across one interesting one:

    I even found some YouTube videos but none have clicked with me so far.

    I would like to start meditation. I must learn first. Does anyone have any good resources that they have personally used to learn?

    Any tips from those that currently meditate successfully?

    It sounds pretty simplistic, but there really is not much to it.

    You just concentrate on your breath. Have no distractions in the background and just breathe in and out. You can say in and out, or 1 and 2 in your mind as you breathe. As your mind wanders, you just notice, and bring it back to your breath.

    Try for short periods at first ~ maybe about 10 minutes.

    You can buy books, videos, cd's etc., but this is really what it's all about.

      Binaural beat music works pretty well to get your brain into the aplha state, theres lots of this stuf around on the net, I brought some on CD from a company called Holosync some time ago and have had some good results.

        If you google the word meditation ...... omg you will find reams of sites to help you with this .... but its really pretty much as Shelley says ..... start very small and work your way up.... even just 2 or 3 minutes can seem like a long time when you first start !! It's the best medicine there is and its cheap ...... except for the music I suppose ..... but even that can found on line !! Namaste !!

          I have searched Google and tried several times but keep feeling like I'm missing something. I can't stop thinking that I'm missing something when I'm trying.

          Maybe I'm expecting too much too soon.

              I did TM (transcendental meditation) for over a decade. After I was injured I had to stop (TM) because it put me more in touch with my nerve pain.

                A nurse researcher at the VA where I work has been doing research using Rapid Relaxation Response type meditative therapy for returning OEF/OIF (and other) veterans for several years. She has published several articles about Mantram therapy (also called passage meditation) and the success she has had in helping veterans with PTSD.                     That is also something I'm dealing with. It's not necessarily increasing but it is a distraction which I think is keeping me from achieving "success".
