I am thinking of Driving again....

I thought long and hard about this, although my C-7 injury is not from driving. I haven't driven in four years and now want to get back out just for my own independence. I know I will have to learn to drive all over again because I need those assistive steering wheels and brakes to help because my right side is much weaker then my left.

Can anyone tell me how it was for you when you go back behind the wheel again?

Probably the biggest consideration you might need to consider will be dollars, given that a van you would need would be $60K - new!

It was easy to get used to & easy to learn... but then again I had no concerns about it, just knew that I wanted to drive again.

I wouldn't say an expensive van is your only option. Work on strengthening your muscles so you can use as little adaptations as possible.

      I have a C6 injury (functional @ C7) & just picked up a '96 BMW 318ti for $3500.

There are ways to make it work. Go for it!

Not sure where you are from, but look into the procedure required by your state dmv. And start that process right away, it can be lengthy.

eta ... but go for it. It is the single most thing I have done to get back to the old "me".

With help from VR, I just got a modified Dodge Grand Caravan. It's been a little over a year since my injury. I would certainly recommend getting a driving evaluation and some training if possible. I tried to attach a pic, but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm new here and still trying to figure things out.

DO IT!!!!!!!!! I waited about three and a half years post and looking back on it, I wish I had done it sooner. So much more freedom and independence. Yeah it cost a bit but the price is definitely worth it. Look into the vocational rehab department in your area. They may be able to help. Certain car dealers may actually reduce prices on certain types of vehicles. Best of luck!!!!

I couldn't wait to get behind the wheel again, so I didn't wait long.

It took me about 2 practice runs before I was comfortable and about 6 before I took my test.

I drive from my powerchair and have a Sienna van.

You should contact your local Department of Rehab Serices and they can get you going.

Don't be scared, it's easier than you think. I actually think I am a better driver now as far as reflexes, but I joke that I have a lead hand now.

I just got my license back last week. I am very excited about the freedoms that I will be able to enjoy now. I had a thread about the process I went through to get back on the road:

Thanks everyone for all the encouragement! I live in New York City and it's not like I need a car or a van because transportation is so accessible. I just would like to because of the convinence and the independence.

So the modifications really can get up to 60K, sheesh! that's alot of moola!

I was thinking of getting a used van and then work up to modifying.
