    Stairs

How are stairs usually dealt with in a fairly large house basement and upstairs from main floor for a quadriplegic in a electric wheelchair?

Are the stairs a straight run, or switchback? The latter is much more expensive and difficult to set up. An elevator is really best, but if that is not possible, a platform stair lift should be considered. Not cheap. Often it is cheaper to consider moving.

Both type stairs straight for the basement, spiralish to upstairs.

In general, approximately how much do these stair lifts cost?

Depending upon the actual situation, between $10,000-20,000 for one staircase for a two story home. Platform lifts are generally more expensive than lifts that require you to transfer from your wheelchair onto a seat.

Resurrecting an old thread here. I am planning some renovations to a home I’m buying. I’ll need to be able to get into the to-be-finished basement, as I will use it for storage, an exercise room, utilities room, and a spare bedroom/bathroom for visitors. I’ve been thinking that I need an elevator, but in order to save space and simplify the renovation I wonder if a platform stair lift might be a better choice.

I’ve never used a stair lift; why are elevators preferred? I live alone, in case that makes a difference. Also open to other interesting options!

When I decided to build my ranch style home instead of remodeling 2 story and put in an elevator, I visited a disabled couple that had an elevator in their home, it was pretty cool, the home was pretty big too, the husband would shower in the downstairs as the wife had her upstairs bathroom fitted with a Hoyer type lift for her bath, although I don't remember the price since that was in 2003 I believe they built new. I guess it depends on what you can afford, or if contractor can even install one. I was at college, and they had fold up platform lifts many places, but i don't know if there is a number of steps or length, they require. I had them put a platform lift in back of building I worked at because they didn't have a fire escape for the back of building. It worked out till snow covered it and assigned rotating employees had to clean it as they would the stairs every time it was bad weather. I built instead of remodel, more control over everything, plus what about power backup or situation where it need service. I get concerned about my darn Permobil chair letting me sit these days as i live alone also (2 times it failed). Do lots of research, visit as many physical places as possible would be my advice, think about your future use of the basement also.
