    calories?

How do you go about calculating how many calories you need a day? I'm a C-5 quadriplegic and my body mass index is around 20. (5'10" and 140lbs.) I would like to maintain what I have without gaining more of a gut. I have been working out every other day with a wrist weights and try to stay active as much I can given my level of injury and in a power wheelchair. Thanks.

There's a link here, that will let you pick your age, sex and activity level (if chair-bound, probably sedentary for this purpose), and will provide # of calories allowed per day to maintain. Eat fewer to loose.

i read somewhere that a quad needs 10.2 kalories/lb to maintain, at my current weight that means 1850 cal/day so I subtrack 500 because I'm trying to lose weight and its been working for me - lost 14 lbs since Christmas.

I read recently a dietician using the "worst-case scenario", laying in bed all day, you need 1500 calories per day. So the numbers calculated above sound about right.

You are right Van Quad. I have been working very closely with a dietician and as someone pretty much in that "worst case scenario" situation, he said 1500-1600 calories per day would be what I would be looking at just to maintain my weight and not lose any more.

Somewhat paradoxically given my injury level, I am really struggling with keeping weight on.

I just ate 4 pupusas for supper. That's probably 1500 calories right there!

                      Van Quad,

                      Pupusas..hummmm

My grandmother was Mexican/Indian and she used to make pupusas for
us kids when ever we visit. My grandmother use to call them masarina cakes we used to eat them chile verde, rice & beans.

                      Thanks for the great memory.

I love pupusas! A lot of the Mexican places around my town make them. I love it with the cabbage stuff (don't know what that is called) and salsa verde. Not good for a lo-cal diet though.

The green stuff is what we would consider coleslaw and is called cortido. Great stuff for the digestion.
