Anyone here on 4-AP or tried it, want to tell me how they felt about it?

Hello everyone, I'm considering going on 4-AP after reading an article written by Dr. Wise.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me their expeirences, wether they felt any improvements and what dosage you took of 4-AP and for how long. I read lots of possible benefits from it, i was just wondering if anyone personally felt these.

I was also wonder if, once you get off this drug, did you loose all the gains you had intially gotten with it?

    Thanks.

I also talked to my doctor about but she doesn't know much about and wants to talk to another doctor that can help her understand it. Does anyone know who she can talk too?

My son is on 4 AP. He has been taking it since mid-March. After his dr talked to him about it, he talked to his PT and head nurse..and they both thought it was a good idea. He is a 23 yr old w/a C 6 incomplete injury as of Feb 4, 2006. I say C6 b/c that is where they say the SCI is, but he also had fracture of C2 & 3 and had to endure a halo for 3 mos. So is that C2/3/6..or just C6? I don't know. He is still seeing improvements, but who knows if it is from 4 AP or not. He is currently an inpatient in rehab for his 2nd 30 day stay since his accident. He takes 10mg 3X a day. Of course insurance doesn't cover this med as it is not approved yet. It costs $58.80 for 90 pills..a 30 day supply. I think he's glad he's taking it, but I don't know what happens if you quit...what you would lose if anything.

I believe it has helped with my my bowel program.

Also, I plan to ramp down off of my baclofen
and the 4 ap should be able to take the place of it.

          NoDefcaPlz,

You say 4ap can take place of bacolfen, but i thought bacolfen did the exact opposite of 4ap. Doesn't bacolfen deaden the signals thats how it reduces the spasims? And i thought 4AP makes more signals flow at a greater strengthen.

Or is that a side effect to reduce spsasims?

I believe that 4 ap does reduce spasticity. Dr. Young would be much better at explaining the why of it though.

After finally going through all the channels that it was safe to take it with having Lupus and my Lupus doc gave me the ok. Got all kinds of info for my Neuro starting back in September to only have him yell at me in March and tell me it was a BOGUS drug!! I was pissed at how he went about denying me the treatment. I'm going to ask my Lupus doc if he'll prescribe it...if not I won't be able to TRY it! It sucks living in a smaller city where docs don't know shit about the new treatments out there.

I have been on 4-AP for 1 year now DR.WISE told me about it. My nero DR. specializes in MS patients. It wakes up your nerves it gave me much more sensations in my legs i take 10mg 3 times a day i tried going to 4 times a day it was too much on my nerves i could feel the difference. I also have gotten extra strength to do more excerises then before. I truly believe it helped me but everyone is different so you can try it and see if you feel any difference. You have to get it from a compound pharamcy. If you have any questions just ask anty

I live in a very small town, i'd call it a village. So i'm guessing my doc is going to be like, WTF IS 4-AP. Any tips on how i can presuade my doc to letting me have it?

Like should I do the research for the doctor, give them print outs, flow charts, a thesis statement? so they don't feel they are wasiting their time? or what? hah thanks for the info guys!!

Cory, this subject comes up often here. If you haven't done so already, do a "4-ap" search of the site. Here's a couple links with stuff Dr. Young has written about it:

                      /forum/showthread.php?t=18666&highlight=4-ap
                      /index.php?page=viewarticle&afile=5_September_2005@ 4aminopyridine.htm

I have yet to try it myself, though, at five years post, I'm getting interested again. I just missed getting in on the Fampridine trial Acorda was doing for SCI as it was too soon after I was hurt. I was also still getting substantial return at that time (18 months post), so telling what was due to the drug would have been impossible.

Awesome thanks Bruce, i should have done that in the first place!

If one doctor won't prescribe it, what do you do then? Can i just find another one of my doctors, and see if they will pass it? Or is it all up to 1 doctor?

anty - are you taking a sustained release formulation from the compounding pharmacy or the immediate release? - thanks!
