I'm nervous about starting a Gym and what kind of reaction I'll get from staff and patrons. This gym has as room that's only for women and I think that's where I'll spend most of my time. I think I'll get a free session with a trainer which will be great because. I'm just concerned that I won't be able to do much in the gym. Wish me luck.

Good luck,
The first step is getting out there and giving it a try. I go to 24 Hour Fitness and I do get some looks but they are good looks people are glad to see those of us with disabilities determined to continue to live life as we should. Take your time and ask as many questions as necessary from your trainer.

if they had a couple specific pieces of equipment, like a sci-fit
stationary handcycle and a smith machine. They had both. I met
a couple wheelers at the gym, too.
If it's a good gym, they'll have plenty of machines. Those are easier
for solo workouts because you can adjust weight/resistance with a
pen, rather than lugging a pair of dumbells around and transfering
on/off a bench.
The only thing is that some small gyms put their equipment so close
together that it's hard to wheel between everything, especially when
there are a lot of people in the gym.
Good luck.

I've been lifting at a gym for two years, and it's great! I was apprehensive at first, but got over it after the first couple of weeks. I mostly use free weights, but if I want to use a machine that's not very accessible, the staff will happily move it. During the cleaning/refurbishment/rearrangement they do every year, they keep wheelchair users in mind and make sure there are multiple wide access routes to all the gear.
Congratulations on taking this step!
