i've got a tilite flip/scissor brake that the little spring broke that holds it open, has anyone figure out how to fix it?

Elastic hair bands. They are dirt cheap and last several years.

Great ideas! I have replaced these brakes more than once through the years. I had torn one apart before to see about replacing the spring to have it as a backup, but I never did complete that task.

I don't know if TiLite upgraded that spring, as I don't recall having to replace one of my brakes on my previous TR, where I did a couple times on the one before that. I have often wanted to count how many times a day I take my brakes on and off, it is a lot.

The older models you can't replace the spring. I believe the newest version has a redesign that allows the spring to be replaced. It's now a barrel spring. Just confirm before ordering

I've been looking at these https://wheelchairbearings.com/produ...-durable-metal for when my current pair finally breaks again. Replaceable spring and metal

          Just my 2c and observation.
My original Tilite brakes are still working well after all the years; although the pivot points are well flogged & worn they still function. One of the 'old' style springs in a set has broken and shows sign of corrosion.
I suspect that the spring temper may be different/improved on the new style. I know that the spring has a radius return which provides greater support at that point of load, instead of a straight (un-reinforced) end as in the old style.

I have mentioned this previously, my suspicion is the people 'pull' up on them to release instead of releasing them consciously keeping the movement in line with the action.
Also, 'snapping' them open instead of a controlled release plays havoc with the mechanism/spring over time. Thankfully my hand function allows me this and for others maybe not so much.

Admission: when I refurbished my 2GX, I upgraded the locks to the newer spring type and relegated the old set to the spares drawer.

I like the appearance and design of those Eagle brakes a lot and if the original brakes were constantly failing me, I would have a set.

            Avoid headaches of constantly breaking...
I went with Hands on Concepts billet aluminum brakes and eventually even got one of their chairs! Not sure current pricing on their brakes but definitely sturdier than the ever breaking composites.

The aluminum brakes by Eagle are awesome and have proven to be robust and trouble-free. Been using them on my TiLite GX2 and TX2 for over a year now and they have been trouble-free. They're a bit pricey at $150/pr., but it's a small price for not having brake failure. I hate adjusting brakes and these have index markings, which makes adjustments easier.

              I bought mine here:

TiLite’s OEM composite compact scissor lock’s are also $70 each, $140 for a pair, at discount, online ($91/ea. MSRP), so these don’t really seem expensive at all, to me. Same price, better material, longer lasting, at the expense of 16g more weight each. 👍

I just purchased a new Ti-lite from Rolling Paradise and have the same brakes but think they came from Ti-lite. I would reach out to John Squires. He has fair prices and Great service.

Those are some interesting brakes. I will need to consider an upgrade.
