  • Power outage

    Hi, living in an apartment, it is not really feasible to have a generator when there is a power outage. However, does anyone know if something like this exists: something that can either be recharged, or runs on batteries, that would provide enough juice to occasionally raise/lower an adjustable bed?

    The only option would be some type of capable battery with a 110 volt inverter. If you use a powerchair you could use those batteries to connect to.

        We bought the battery backup option to go with our 2 Transfermaster beds. Our DME hooked it up when he set beds up. Luckily, we also have a standby generator so we never had to use it. I like to check the house voltage as the backup system has a readout constantly of the house voltage. I understand the backup will last 24 hours. As a standard practice my wife and I always set up the bed for the next transfer. That way, if for example, power or motor fails while we are in bed the bed is already set at correct height for transfer height. Try going to website for maker of your bed to see if they sell a backup option.

          If you use a powerchair you'd need a 24 volt inverter, and have someone with the know how wire it in. On one of my chairs I mounted an Andersen SB50 connector so I can just plug in the inverter. I would suggest at least a 300 watt inverter to operate a bed.

            I have battery backup on my bed but not on my LAL mattress , Have used a 1000 battery booster pack with a inverter and it will run the mattress for almost a hour. To just adjust the bed should last for days. Was going to do the hookup to the chair but this is easy.

              What you want is an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Just go to Amazon and search "UPS" and you will see what I mean. There's a wide range.

                Do you have a balcony to the outside? If so I think you could run a very small portable generator there long enough to charge your batteries. I am lucky to own my own home and just last summer I had a 22 kw full house genrec generator installed as the electrial service provider to my house has a reputation of poor service when it comes to weather related issues

                      This interests me, but I’m not sure if this would be overkill for what I am looking for. I’m basically looking for something that would allow me to adjust my bed (perhaps a booster with inverter?). Would this equipment allow me to run a portable space heater, and if so, for how long?

                        You can use it to power anything that is rated at 1500 watts or below. So for instance, if you have a unit like the Vernado Model #VH203 (see picture below) that has two speeds at 375 watts and 750 watts you would be able to use it and power your bed.

                          Not allowing for conversion losses (usually around 8%), 60AH battery can provide 60A for an hour, so W=VA; 720W (12vX60A=720Watts)
                          You could get 720W for an hour, or any permutation of this relationship (360W for 2hrs, 72W for 10hrs, etc), not deducting conversion losses.

                              I have a portable briefcase solar panel that I can use to recharge the power pack.

                              Recharging the XPower Power Pack with a Solar Panel
                              A 12-volt solar panel rated to produce a maximum of 12 amps can be usedto charge XPower 1500 via the DC Power Socket. Once the solar panel?sDC plug is inserted into the DC Power Socket and the solar panel isplaced in the sun, XPower 1500 will charge automatically just as with theAC Charger. With direct sunlight, a typical 3 Amp solar panel will chargeXPower 1500 in about 24 hours. If the solar panel does not have aregulated output, disconnect it immediately after XPower 1500 ischarged.
