  • Best way to wash your wheelchair?

    Hey guys!

How do you clean your wheelchair? What method/cleaners do you use?

I wish I lived near Pittsburgh. Every year at UMCP Rehabilitation Institute they have a "wheelchair wash" day. Here's a video of it: http://www.spinalpedia.com//videodetails.php?vid=104353

And here are a couple more wc-care videos if you're up for it, including caster-care and how to change pneumatic tires: http://www.spinalpedia.com/blog/2013...es-a-long-way/

I use lemon pledge. Used it to clean my motorcycles and it works great on wheelchairs as well.

I take a shower in mine once a month, or so, and scrub it down with a toilet brush (unused on a toilet...ever...), washing it with the same stuff I wash the rest of me with, Dr. Bronner's. A squirt of Balistol onto the bearings after and I call it done.

I mostly use antibacterial wipes. I don't know how good/bad that is!

Thanks for the great links! I've found it surprisingly difficult to find good information on chair maintenance. I know I don't do enough but because of my hand problems I'm a bit scared to start taking my chair apart in case I can't reassemble it

I just take my manual chairs out and hose them off every couple of weeks like a car. No problems with rust or anything. I am serious. I cannot do that with my power chair because of the electrical stuff. It is impossible to keep it really clean.

Perfect for after showering. Keeps the chair from getting chaffed and rashed.

I like to take mine through the car wash, pay the bit extra for foam & dry, and wear your swim shorts. Also saves taking a shower that day

                      ...sorry, couldnt resist!

I'd also suggest Brazilian wax for the caster spacers.
