  • Christine, my Permobil C500

Remember the Stephen King book "Christine"? Well, she seems to have possessed my C500. About a month ago, I thought I noticed that my chair would click like the joystick had been moved. Well, now it's happening frequently. This will be the second time within two years that my joystick has been "bent" as the techs stated. I recognize that I'm not easy on my gear, any of it, but for the joystick to fail on an annual basis is unacceptable. Last time my vendor had a spare laying around and gave it to me for free, NO such luck this time.

Has anyone experienced this problem? Anyone have a used C500 joystick laying around taking up space?

I have a 500 yard roll at 4:30am to get to my hunting blind. If this thing strands me, I'm gonna be pissed!

      The key word is "YET"

When I was on the lift today and it clicked, I had a quick oh-shit moment. I turn it off immediately now as soon as I get on.

Evidently not Christine! She was on perfect behavior almost the entire time I hunted

She through a fit this morning when I got up at 3:45, click, click, click.....

I stopped by the shop after hunting and the joystick is def. going to need to be replaced

You mean the entire controller needs replaced. Damn. My Frontier X-5 clicks sometimes just with me wiggling around. Mine is caused by a loose cable connection I believe.
I will be receiving a C500 soon. You and I get into places where breakdowns can be life threatening. No cell service so I carry a satelite phone.

That sucks. You've got some balls, off in the woods with a questionable wheeler.

            Hope it dosen't cost much.

I think I am going to see about putting a wider tire on the C500, do you think that may help with traction and such?

Guys, there are certainly some features of this chair that I like. I will never voluntarily own a front wheel chair again, at least not this one. It has terrible traction going uphill especially so in loose gravel, soft soil, leaves or damp grass, basically anything other than hard surface. When I have to turn around and go backwards to get out of the some of the places I go, there's a design flaw. Wider drive tires MAY help but IMO you'll still have the same problem when you shift the weight off the front drives going uphill.

Fore, I know what you mean about the sat phone. I always let someone know where I'll be and when I'll be out. Fortunately, I haven't had to spend the night outdoors since the early 90s! The interior housing for the joystick is plastic(according to the rep) and this problem is quite common. The housing on Sunrise chairs is metal and the rep and I are discussing re-wiring one of those for my C500. I'm looking for a new joystick, yes the whole controller unit. In the meantime, I'll run it until it drops.

This chair is supposed to be off of the best but I'd never buy another. It is not sleek, for lack of a better term, and it's design is a large footprint. The armrest hinges guarantee that if you accidentally turn into, or back into something, you're going to dent or scratch it. It just feels cumbersome and awkward.

Do you still have your old one? Interested in selling it for parts, or selling some parts of it?

When I was at the SCI clinic, almost all the power chairs were Permobil, every diferent type. Appearently the VA must feel they are the most reliable right now.

It's a bitch trying to find a powerchair that works well indoors and out. I remodeled a large two car garage to live in, so I have room but there are so many tradeoffs. The Frontier X-5 is not it for me.

My best shot was the Omegatrac but I have 0 trust in the new company. Since I may need to move back to the hood and into a senior high rise, I chose the C500 as a kind of compromise. The building is surounded by fields and two prison complexes so I have room to explore. I hope I don't end up stuck.

The Canadian company, Ranger Wheelchairs has a number of interesting models but not in the US yet.

Hi DeadEye I just purchased the new M400 I only have 25 miles on it but I live on a farm and so far this chair can go anywhere I need to across soft lawn up steep ramps in worked up fields carefully. This chair replaced a pride Q6000z that i got rid of after only 3 years.I hope this chair will be reliable my dealer said it will last time will see. I also got the permobil C3 lock down system work good now took my installer a while to figure it but it lock down now.
