  • Handcycle question

Forgive me if this is a stupid question....

Are there any road hand cycles where you can use your feet as well?

There are lots of recumbent trikes, many of which look a lot like handcycles, where you use your feet. Check out catrikes.

Or are you looking for something that uses hands and feet simultaneously? Or allows you to choose between hands and feet?

There have been a few attempts at making bikes that utilize both leg and arm power. They are usually very complicated and not really all that effective. Additionally, they are also very heavy. So, it might not help an individual with limited strength in both arms and legs. The heavier bike would just require that much more power input. The best option would probably just be to have separate bikes.

        Thanks for the input.

I think he was hoping for something where you could use either feet or hands. Together or alternate. His arms are normal and very strong/muscular.

My father thought he saw a "dual" bike of sorts at the rehab hospital, but I was unaware of the downsides (complicated, heavy).

He actually has pretty good strength in his legs, but not good enough balance/core to ride a regular bike with his legs. Handcycles are great, but the really low ones are too hard to get in/out. I agree that the trikes are a great compromise, but he has brushed those off.... I will try suggesting that again.

Well, if he wants to translate the full body gym experience to the open road, how about one of these things: http://www.elliptigo.com/?

I saw one in a ride I did - goofiest thing ever. But might be just right for some folks.

ha ha... I saw a commercial for these. Definitely goofy looking.

I think his legs aren't strong enough for this elliptical bike thing. He needs to be sitting down.

Lightfoot Cycles in Montana makes all sorts of combinations. They're pricey, but make what seem to be very nice bikes:

I personally would love to have a Two-Fun, with handcycle in the front (no foot pedals) and a bicycle attachment on the back. My guy and I could take all kinds of long rides, currently not possible with my Dragonfly.
