    Need a new cushion

I have always Jay cushions which rarely pass 2 years before they bust and spew floam everywhere. I have a Jay Deep contour at the moment and its done the same thing... after less than 12 months.

Thinking about Varilites. I have no idea which one to get tho. A little over a year tho, I had a hip replacement. Since then that side has always sat further forward... It seems tho that the other hip is digging into my cushion the most as that side of the cushion is the side that busted. Not sure if its coincidence. Or whether that hip has always been like that. Looking into Varilite cushions now.. Seems easier to fix if it does bust. Just get a puncture repair kit, Ok not that simple... But at least u don't have to replace floam/gel...

Also? Is there a difference in your ability to propel your wheelchair with these cushions as opposed to a Jay? Just wonder if the differing firmness between the Jay and the Varilite would make a difference?

    Hello "Keiser,"
Given that you have a challenging sitting position with the hip replacement, I would find a good physical therapist, occupational therapist, wheelchair seating specialist and have them evaluate your needs and match you up with a cushion with the proper adaptations that will accommodate the the sitting problems you mention. Stock off the shelf cushions rarely come with accessories to adapt the cushion to your special needs.

    All the best,
    GJ

I have 2 Varilite Evolution cushions that I've been using since 2004. For me, they're great, but nothing's perfect!

The cushions are very leak-resistant, but if you get molten weld spatter on 'em, guess what? LOL

The repair kits are NOT easy. Compounded by the instructions that were apparently written for some outdated patches. The descriptions and instructions do not match what's in the kit. Makes it difficult to know which patch to use (I had to call Varilite, and it took their engineer a while to track it down and get back to me!). Then you gotta heat the glue and be VERY quick with smoothing it on and getting the patch on right away. You do not have as much time as they say in the instructions!

You should definitely "patch" in a sample area before trying it over the hole.

Luckily, I've only had two leaks in all these years.

As stated, you need to get pressure mapped with whatever cushions you test.

As for mobility, the Evolutions are feather-light, so it makes the chair much lighter than with the gel cushions I used before. The foam makes it much more stable than, say, a Roho, which I've also used.

I give the Evolutions 2 thumbs up.

What happened to sportaid? I filled out an order for a cushion, I've sent sent emails asking for shipping quotes to australia before I give my credit card details coz i want to confirm costs and times before I go ahead with the order... That and the fact I am going overseas in less than 2 weeks so i am not sure I will get it on time... This is wrong!!!!

Good luck, I just ordered a cushion from them and it took 10 days to get it.

I've got a varilite Median and am happy as a pig in shyt. It's a great cushion, I go and fish and sit on it all day, 16 hrs, and no sores or discomfort.
