    Stem cells carry hopes of patients, doctor says

    PHILADELPHIA
    Guy Fried, the chief medical officer at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, believes there is only one way Woodrow Wilson High School senior Shykem Lawrence will ever walk again: a stem cell transplant.

    But until legislation is passed that approves widespread research on stem cells, Fried believes quadriplegics will never realize their dreams of walking again.

    "It's caught in the politics," Fried said Wednesday before releasing Lawrence, who is paralyzed below his neck, to his family. "Stem cells can help with virtually everything. How about stroke? How about head injuries?
