Regeneration of axon & myelin, question for Dr Young

    Dr Young,

What would be the right sequence of an hypothetical regeneration process of the axon?

    1) myelin has to generate first so that the axon will grow into it
    2) the axon has to generate first, the myelin will cover it after the regeneration
    3) the myelin and the axon have to grow together

How does it work in the peripheral nervous system with the Schwann cells?

    Thanks
    Paolo

    Paulo,

It is the other way around. The axons first grow and then they are remyelinated. In peripheral nerves, when axons degenerate, all the Schwann cells de-differentiate into macrophage-like cells. When the axons have regrown, these cells then settle in to remyelinate the axons. In fact, there is worry that the presence of mature myelin inhibits axonal growth.
