      FREMONT, Calif. – Sept. 27, 2016 – Asterias Biotherapeutics, Inc. (NYSE MKT: AST), a biotechnology company pioneering the field of regenerative medicine, today announced that the first patient with incomplete AIS-B cervical spinal cord injury was successfully dosed with 10 million cells of AST-OPC1 (oligodendrocyte progenitor cells) in the SCiSTAR clinical trial at Shepherd Center in Atlanta. The company recently received FDA clearance to expand the study into this additional patient population based on the continued favorable safety profile observed in the ongoing clinical study. A total of 5-8 AIS-B patients are expected to be enrolled and dosed with 10 million cells in the study. Asterias recently reported positive early efficacy data for AST-OPC1 in AIS-A patients, or those with complete cervical spinal cord injuries.

(NYSE MKT: AST), today presented positive interim efficacy data from the 10 million cell cohort in the Company’s ongoing AST-OPC1 SCiSTAR Phase 1/2a multicenter clinical study in complete cervical spinal cord injury patients. While early in the study, with only 4 of the 5 patients in the cohort having reached 90 days after dosing, all patients have shown at least one motor level of improvement so far and the efficacy target of 2 of 5 patients in the cohort achieving two motor levels of improvement on at least one side of their body has already been achieved. Patient improvements are being measured by the ISNCSCI neurological classification scale widely used to quantify functional status of patients with spinal cord injuries. As suggested by existing research, patients with complete cervical spinal cord injuries that show two motor levels of improvement on at least one side may regain the ability to perform daily activities such as feeding, dressing and bathing.

          This was covered in the last few weeks under Asterias. There are some good articles and video of him doing things that was put on the other threads. They will try 20 million cells in the future patients

              First ever? Tall claim. The Chinese have been doing it successfully since the late 90's. Here's an account from mid-2000.

              He could not control his urination and bowl movement by himself.

              2. After receiving the stem cell transplantations, the patient is able to:

              His muscle tension is improved to normal level;
              The sensation of his body is improved obviously;
              Feeding himself by holding a spoon in person;
              Playing his computer by himself;
              Sweating by himself;
              Standing by himself via braces;
              His weight is increased to over 70kg;
              Controlling urination and bowl movement by himself.
