Rick Hansen Foundation grants $20 million to spinal-cord research centre

I´m tired of the blind faith that many people have in buildings. Why waste money in bricks when you actually can invest in the real thing, A.K.A. research?
I´m curious about the number of centers built in the world for research, and how many are really doing something useful.

“We look forward to increasing collaboration by engaging with people with SCI, research leaders and clinicians so that the most promising discoveries with the best chance of achieving cures will make it out of the labs and into clinical trials,” noted Dr. Wolfram Tetzlaff, Incoming Director of ICORD. “Then, these results will be applied to people with SCI who can benefit the most from them.”

“ICORD’s scientists and clinicians have been working on many fronts in the quest to treat spinal cord injury, such as stimulating the re-growth of nerve fibres in the damaged cord, or re-training spared or re-grown nerve fibres through rehabilitation,” said Dr. Gavin Stuart, Dean of the UBC Faculty of Medicine and Vice Provost, Health. “We are grateful for this new infusion of support from the Rick Hansen Foundation, and look forward to working closely with the Rick Hansen Foundation and the Rick Hansen Institute on the most effective allocation of funds, and the most promising strategies for bringing our discoveries to patients.”

Rick Hansen sought to inspire others by embarking on his Man in Motion World Tour nearly three decades ago. More recently, he urged the nation’s difference-makers to be the inspiration through the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay.



On Monday, Hansen told a Richmond audience it was their turn to inspire.



“I hope when you leave this evening you’ll be thinking about what is it that you can do to take this moment and make it count,” said Hansen, speaking to a River Rock Show Theatre audience from his wheelchair on stage. “To be able to think about one kind act to be able to push our community one step forward: one day, one year, one new generation at a time.”

Doesn't that quote "World without paralysis after spinal cord injury" hung up directly behind Mr. Hansen state exactly what Dennis from Stem Cells and Atom Bombs has been trying get the Hansen Foundation to commit to? Cure not Care?

Pretty cool to include the ISS:

At Monday’s event, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield paid tribute to Hansen through a pre-recorded video from the International Space Station, where Hadfield is orbiting the Earth.

Hadfield was a difference-maker himself, participating in the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay. Before launching into space last December, Hadfield took his relay medal with him. As he spoke, the medal floated in the space station’s zero-gravity environment.

“It’s your turn to be a difference-maker,” said Hadfield, who is expected to return to Earth May 13. “You can make changes in your own community and you can make changes in the world.”

The purpose of this story is not to undermine the exceptional service that Hansen and his foundation have provided to disabled people. It is to review the stewardship of the millions of dollars that public and private donors have contributed to the foundation.

Neither Hansen nor anyone else at the foundation agreed to be interviewed for this story.

Written questions were met with limited responses and in some cases, no answer at all.
