Viral Vectors for SCI and CES

How are viral vectors helpful for spinal cord injury and cauda equina syndrome?

Viral vectors are a tool commonly used by molecular biologists to deliver genetic material into cells. This process can be performed inside a living organism (in vivo) or in cell culture (in vitro). Viruses have evolved specialized molecular mechanisms to efficiently transport their genomes inside the cells they infect. Delivery of genes by a virus is termed transduction and the infected cells are described as transduced.

It's a delivery system method that can be very useful for SCI. For instance, a single injection could be used to deliver a pay load rather than multiple injections into the spinal cord. An example would be the work being done in the UK to deliver Chondroitinase ABC to the patient. They're delivering a genetically modified form of the Ch'ase ABC via the cells. Here is a link to information about that SCI project, or this one being completed on pTEN for axon regeneration.
