    Incidence sees dramatic rise

Spinal Cord Injuries 18 November, 2010 - Cases of spinal cord injuries referred to the Thimphu referral hospital are increasing annually. From 14 cases in 2008, it increased to 35 the following year.

Until yesterday this year, there were 24 cases, of which one died.
The spinal cord is a long tube like structure, which conducts sensory and motor nerve impulses to and from the brain to other parts of the body.

Spinal cord injuries in Bhutan are commonly caused by falls from tree, roof and cliff; but now motor vehicle accidents are the main reason for spinal cord injuries, said doctors.

“With the increase in the number of vehicles in the last few years, more spinal cord injuries are caused by the motor vehicle accidents,” said the orthopaedic department head, Dr Tshewang Thinley.
