I was a big mandrake/mandriva user since 10.2 but recently when I moved to NC, I had to switch to wireless. I got super issues with mandriva's drivers, no matter what I did, nothing would work. So I upgraded to a new version and Mandriva powerpack 2007 spring and it still didn't work.

So I said screw it, downloaded Ubuntu and I am loving it, auto configged EVERYTHING! even wireless, found all the access points.

I was impressed.


Now i'm working on getting beryl installed but it looks like I found my new distro.

It also is just 1 regular cd download, not a 4 gig dvd that takes 45 mins to install. Sure it doesn't come with alot of junk you can pre-install but if I want I can just as easy use its download manager to get what I need.

Took around 10 mins to get it up and running.


PS: Anyone who hasn't used Linux and want to give it a try, I highly recommend it. If you screw this up, you shouldn't be allowed to use a computer. :P

Good deal. I use Ubuntu for general-purpose computing, and Gentoo for development. Unfortunately my video card can't keep up with the Beryl eye-candy, but that's okay. I really believe that Ubuntu would suffice for anyone who doesn't need to use a Windows-only commercial application on a regular basis.

I've never tried Unbuntu, but I've heard it's almost as good as slice bread. They've done wonders on the auto-config.

In Parallels, it works fine, I've got a friend who is using it. With bootcamp it might be more difficult for lack of good driver support. Another option might be the VMWare beta for OSX.

Ugh VMWare can be a pain........ I've seen unbuntu done in Parrells on TV, and with the 2Gig RAM it was smoke.

Autoconfig works great. I have to manually install video drivers from ATI to get 3d and my plasma working right. But each tim I just go to the forums and learn how.
Still haven't installed my wireless, but I have my cd laying here since you recommended NDIS Wrapper a few weeks ago. I just use my cat5, it's a whole lot faster anyway. I'm all about speed when xferring large files to my server, which I do quite often.
I need to install beryl Cory, keep forgetting about it. When you get it up and running, post a few screencaps puuhlease.

check it out, this may be the gamers solution. Read about it, cutting edge as far as distro's go.

I'm going to install it on my server. Should be an easy install but it uses 768mb and a GeForce3 Ti 500 on an AMD +1800, so the eye candy won't be up to snuff. I may put it on my laptop later and my nephew's new computer, where it will run a LOT better.

If anything will run LoMAC BobKat, this one has the best chance. We shall see later on.

CapnGimp there is software that will help you run windows games on linux. I tried it out and I could run age of the empries 3, it just takes alot more processing power/resources.

It just wasn't worth the hassel though. I just put linux on a seperate harddrive, so restarting into windows to play games seemed more realistic to me.

You can also use Wine to run them. Takes some work around, but they've got alot of them working.
