1080 vs 4k

But being in the cable industry for 20 years and now retired I would not tell someone to get an older TV in this case 1080 when prices have since dropped big time and now someone can get a 4k for less price and get much better value.

Agree that there is not a lot of content in 4k but over all the picture is going to be brighter and more clear simply due to more screen pixels.

The thing I don't like about 4K is that my folks are currently using an analog cable box and the picture does not look very good. You can only blow an image up so far before it looks cheap. Kinda like watching a VHS movie on a 1080 TV.

How about refresh rate? Is 120 better than 60 when there are fast moving things on screen? Seems like it would be.

Refresh rates complicate things even more. Some gamers like using a monitor with 144hz refresh. Refresh rate vs higher resolution and then throw in gpu power. Of course a monitor still needs a tuner for cable.

For my old eyes and basic cable connection it's doubtful I can tell the difference of many of the features offered in todays tvs. One thing I look for is an IPS panel (vs TN or VA).

You definitely notice 60Hz VS 144Hz difference, it's fairly substantial but 4K montiros with 144Hz refresh rates are $1k and you need $5k PC to get 144HZ in 4k on most modern titles so it depends on if you want to spend such money. I'd go for a 60Hz, IPS panel basic 4k if you really want one - that's a good balance.

analog cable box?? You can hook up and antenna to it and get HD or add a firestick and get free HD content!

I got them to give up cable. My sister and I got them a Toshiba Fire TV in 4K and hooked them up to my antenna. They're slowly getting used to it. They took the older TV upstairs and have a Fire stick for it.

So if they have an antenna connected it should be getting locals in HD!

Plus the Firestick should also be HD content with 4k on things like YouTube.

It is now. Their analog cable box was the main problem.

I was debating whether I need it in my bedroom with a 40" TV. 99% of my movies are DVD and I don't think that they will look as good on a 4K TV than a 1080 HD television.

Toss the box as far as you can toss it...haven't needed those in way to many years to count.

You cant connect an analog box when all the signals are now digital.


4k will or should show more clear colors and better true blacks even watching DVD guilty content.

Not all my movies are available online to stream and sometimes the internet is not super reliable. I hate trying to watch a movie and dealing with buffering.

I can't buy a TV just yet anyway because my local ambulance transport wants me to pay upfront and then reimburse me if insurance pays later. I have an appointment on the 25th that might prevent me from shopping. But that's a conversation for a different thread.

What is the majority of your content? If it's 1080p (most likely). A 4K TV can actually decrease picture quality. Because 4K TV has so much more resolution than 1080p content can provide, the TV has to upscale. In other words, the TV has to create content to "fill in the blanks". Not all TVs do this well. Sony does this well.

That's why a less expensive 1080p TV can look better than a more expensive 4K TV when it's streaming lower resolution video. Because the 4K TV may not be upscaling well - a problem with low end 4K TVs.

If you want a 4K TV, then Sony won't let you down. Because of their superior upscaling.

Just an FYI I retired 20 years in the cable industry so might be able to help...what speed internet do you have?

Buffering many times comes from using an old modem and not keeping it updated.

I have had an old 32” 1080 Samsung that I bought back in 2008 for around $850 that still works great. It has outlasted Vizios and a few other newer brands. I have the audio going through my old Kenwood stereo system purchased back in 1992 and it still sounds great too. Sorry nothing of any real value to add to this discussion.

Holding on to old equipment can be cost effective but one misses so much with not being able to stream content and usually of someone is holding on to older equipment in streamlining the cable/dish and home internet and cutting the cord one can save enough to upgrade equipment

We had a family member paying $200 for cable and internet and we moved them to Sling $40 & T-Mobile @home internet ($50) for combines $90

Now they have channels they didn't have at lower cost, internet is faster

They saved enough in 1st few months to afford a 4k TV 65" (under $300 at Christmas time and a Vizo home theater $150 at Costco

The love the larger shaper picture and can hear so much better with rear speakers near them

They love streaming older movies for free to and love watching YouTube hes a tech guy and she loved home improvement creators
