    Emergency caregiver service Phoenix area?

Does anyone know of a emergency caregiver service for a c4/5 quadriplegic? I'm in the Phoenix area. I might be needing a caregiver, live in, for one or two months. But I won't know it unless the situation actually happens.

Things are set up pretty good here, so I could probably talk most people through it. I could probably do with a caregiver going a few hours in the morning, a few hours in the afternoon, a few hours at night. I don't need someone all night, I do have a few others living here, but they are having their own medical issues and won't be able to be much help. But they could help in an emergency if something went wrong. To do minor things if I need help at night, like needing moved around, Etc. They're just going through their own surgeries and don't have much strength. All around bad timing for everything.

Would Medicare cover something like this do you think? I have home Health covered in my insurance, but it's mostly only for when a doctor signs you up for medical stuff you're going through, not custodial care.

Are you vent dependent? Require other skilled nursing care like complex wound care? If not it is extremely unlikely that Medicare would cover any of this. Do you qualify for Medicaid? They may cover a few hours daily but this doesn't happen quickly, and in most states you have to find your own caregivers. Otherwise you are stuck private paying or may have to go to a nursing home.

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.

Yes, because vent care (as well as wound care) is considered a skilled nursing task (meaning it should be done by a licensed nurse, not a PCA), although many people do have their PCAs do these tasks. Even if you have a licensed nurse authorized by Medicare to do skilled tasks, rarely will they also do what Medicare also considers "maintenance" care (such as bathing, transfers, preparing and feeding meals, ROM exercises, dressing, etc.) (KLD)

So I can ask/Require extra help from Medicare in terms of skilled nursing and they won't have to go through IHSS? I am a c1 vent dependent quad living at home with only my mom is my caretaker currently and we've been trying to get help for a long time but just keep hearing there is a shortage of nurses. Any help/insight you might have?

You can try with both Medicare and Medicaid. You will also need a physician's prescription. If they authorize payment, it will be limited, and this does not guarantee that a home health agency will be able to provide the staff. There is precedent for this in CA though, so you may want to seek the assistance of your local CIL in filing appeals (you will always be initially turned down). (KLD)
