    Hi:

Does anyone who's ever moved to a different state have any advice or experience recruiting and hiring PCAs?

We use and recommend craigslist. Your thread would be better served in the Caregiving Forum. Welcome to CareCure!

Thanks for the welcome. I haven't found anyone yet, but we've tried to get referrals from the local senior citizen services. Seems like everything out here is geared either to people either under 18 or over 60!

Have you tried the East Bay/Contra Costa county Craig's List (posting your own ad, not searching for existing ads)??

                Have you looked on www.Care.com?

Contacted the local ILC to see if they have listings? http://www.ilrscc.org/

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.

                  Hi "Starlight,"
Welcome to the East Bay, I live near by.
My wife helps me with my personal care and fortunately, I have only had to use the services of temporary personal care assistants (PCA) when my she was recovering from a couple surgeries. But the thoughts of what I would do if I needed to hire a PCA are never very far from my mind. In addition to the ideas already mentioned here, here are a few thoughts.
*Cal State Concord Campus has a pre nursing program. There may be students enrolled in this program who need part time work while they are going to school and the Accessibility Services department might be able to help you identify possible candidates or direct you to a placement program within the system.

                  Concord, CA 94521

*Diablo Valley College with campuses in Concord and San Ramon (a junior college) has a disability support department that may have a placement service or may be able to direct you to placement resources with the college system.
                  http://www.dvc.edu/org/departments/dss/

*John Muir Hospital group with campuses in Concord, Walnut Creek and satellite facilities in the area has an office of Senior Services. While you are not a senior, they may have some suggestions about and resources for finding a PCA.
                  http://www.johnmuirhealth.com/servic...-services.html

*Kaiser Permanente has a medical center in Walnut Creek and may have a seniors department or other service departments that can help you identify sources for finding a PCA.

If you are looking for physicians in the area, send me a private message and I will pass along some suggestions. We have been in the area for over 20 years. With the exception of a sprinkling of a few weeks of hot weather during summer, we think the East Bay is an almost perfect place to live. Hope you enjoy living here too.
