    Fear of a Syrinx

After hearing the symptoms from Sugarcube... I think I may have one. My hands go numb... often but not all the time. Then, I can hardly move my arms over my head.. I have severe shoulder pain and I feel very weakon transfers. My joints ache big time too. These symptoms are very scary and I truly am not sure what to do? Can this be fixed or is it a dome and gloom situation? Wise... what do you tink. Thanks.

    Syrinx

I haven't had one yet, but an MRI might detect it.

I hope you don't have one.

      Syrinx

My son has a syrinx. He began to experience problems in his good (unaffected) hand 2 1/2 years after his injury. He thought he was overusing it, and did not go to his doctor until he began dropping things. He also noticed that his hand muscles had begun to atrophy. An MRI with dye was needed to detect the syrinx, and he was told that a lamenectomy was needed to prevent further damage. He had the lamenectomy 2 years ago, and there has been no further damage.

I would recommend talking to your doctor sooner rather than later to determine what is going on.

A syrinx is possible, but it could also be spinal root compression. Either way you need to see a good neurologist or neurosurgeon, have some tests (EMG and MRI usually) and determine what the cause is and if it can be corrected or at least arrested. Ignorance in this area is not bliss. You need to find out what is happening, and don't delay. Call on Monday.

          Mike,

I'm sorry I didn't mean to scare you. For your sake, I hope it is not a syrinx. But I would still definitely get an MRI done to be safe. Those symptoms are not something they should ignore. Make the doctors listen to you. Please keep us posted. Good Luck. My best to you!!

Mike, I remember you asking about this before. I developed a syrinx one year after my injury. My wrist extensors - my lowest working muscles - started getting weaker, then began feeling stiff. This happened over just a ~6 month period. The symptoms were constant, they didn't come and go. Like others, I suggest you get the MRI to be safe.

Go to Craig Hospital in Denver & see Dr. Scott Falci, as soon as you can. He worked a miracle on my wife!

I had a EMG test done and my doc said he didn't see anything that made him think I had a syrinx, but I have the numbness and tingling in my hand, and it seems like my wrist are getting tighter. They also said they couldn't do an MRI because of my hardware in my neck. Does anyone have any suggestions or any idea of what may be causing this...

                  Junker Please elaborate

I would like to hear more details of your numbness. I too have it, in my hands, sometimes n my face, and mostly when constipated. However, I seem to be losing alot of strength on my arms. I am T-12 complete. It is scary. Plus both shoulders are now, absolutely killing with pain. I keep thinking it is because I sleep on them in a bad position due to hardware. My hardware that bolts me all together is very restrictive to get into a good position to sleep. This pain, along with losing arm strength makes me think I might have a Srynix or something else not good? WHO knows, but I don't like this feeling of losing strength? Thanks, Guys for all input!!! Junker.. please tell us more about what you feel and suspect? Thanks, Mike

Mike, have a doctor check you out....don't worry and fret about something that may or may not be going on. We can give you accounts of our own personal experiences but you need to be evaluated by your doctor and maybe have tests done. Hang in there and get some medical facts from your provider.....it could be something serious or it could be something easily remedied.......or it could be nothing (just getting older).

                      syrinx

after 33 years injured they found a syrinx in me. I took a mri 3 times now 1 a year for three years and they said it hasn't grown. My left arm doesn't feel as strong and sometimes my hand and wrist feel funny. I never know if it's just all the transfers and getting old,,,and with doing transfers the wrists get a lot of pressure put on them. I even quit driving for awhile just to make sure my arm is ok.

I, too, have been developing those same symptoms lately. I've also had decreased sensation in my foot/legs and increased tightness in the ankles. I'm scheduled for an MRI next and quite anxious about the whole thing. Good luck, Mike.

Glad you got an appt Mike, you too Dan_nc. Be brave, the sooner the better all the way around. If there is nothing wrong, good; if something is wrong, it needs taken care of. Either way, you need to find out. All the best to both of you, let us know what happens.
