Klebsiella Pneumoniae - Dr Young - Nurse ??

My son has another UTI. Results came back and need help understanding this- Klebsiella Pneumoniae. He is on Cipro.

Did they do a sensitivity in addition to the culture? This is critical. You cannot prescribe the correct antibiotic without the sensitivity. Just knowing the type of bacteria is not very helpful. Cipro is a widely over-used broad spectrum antibiotic. It is often used for everything, which is why we now have so many bacteria that are resistant to Cipro.

Call the physician back 72 hours after the urine was cultured to get the results of the sensitivity test, and ask if the antibiotic originally prescribed is still the correct one.

Klebsiella is a common urinary pathogen in people with SCI. It can be seen in people with urinary stones, so it would be important also to know if he has been screened for the presence of stones.

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.

      Testing for stones ??

How do they test for urinary stones? Yes, a sensitivity test was done.

      Thank you!!
