    Use of Dantrolene muscle relaxant

I have been advised by my phsysiatrist to take Dantrolene, a muscle relaxant, to relieve my muscle tightness, especially in my hamstings. I am currently taking 70mg/day of baclofen as well and wondering how they will interact and whether one will cancel out the other? Any experience with this combination?

Have you tried Zanaflex (tizanadine)? We rarely use Dantrolene sodium (Dantrium) anymore. Of all the antispasticity drugs, it is the one most likely to cause you to feel weak in your non-paralyzed muscles too. The drug can be used together with either baclofen or tizanadine.

In addition, dantrolene can be liver toxic, so should not be taken by anyone who drinks much alcohol or takes a lot of Tylenol or NSAIDs, and frequent liver function studies should be done (at least every 3-4 months) while taking it.

Aren't checks of liver function required of people taking Zanaflex?

Yes, but the risk is somewhat lower.

What is the starting dosage of Zanaflex? Can it be taken long-term?

Also, is Zanaflex a medication that takes effect soon after it is taken, or does it have to build up in one's system before it has any effect?

Both, it has an effect after absorbed around 1-2 hours, but you need to continue to take it on a regular bases to really help.

                  Hi
Glad I came along this post, I have been taking dantrium for the past 11 years or so and must admit it is my drug of choice for muscle spasms, was initially on baclofen but it made my spasms worse so I have just stuck with the dantrium, I am on 75mg daily, in the process of going back to 50mg.
I'm in australia and have never heard of zanaflex but will be asking my GP about it at my next appt, perhaps its time for a change.
Have never been told that it would make my working muscles weaker, and also the liver function impairment.
Hmmm time for some changes perhaps
                  Sorry to hijack the thread

As long as you have your liver functions (test) checked regularly you shouldn't worry too much . Any elevation would warrant closer monitoring and possibly discontinuation of the Dantrium.
