    Antibiotic Constipation

I was recently prescribed Cipro for congestion and then doxycycline and Ceftin. I have not had a bowel movement for about 10 days. I have positive bowel sounds. I have used a stool softener every other today, vegetable laxative every other day, Trulance almost every night, and one dose of magnesium citrate without success. I also have used two fleet enemas. My normal routine is going Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with digital extraction and Enemeez. I welcome any advice.

What "vegetable laxative"? Sounds like you need to pull out the big guns. You may be impacted, and should expect to have an accident with using some of these strong laxatives. Call your physician and get a prescription for Lactulose. Buy some over-the-counter senna (Senakot). Take a tablespoon of lactulose every hour when awake. Take 2 senna tablets twice daily.

Once you have really good formed stool, if you are still on these antibiotics, add DSS (Colace) 1000mg. daily and a laxative like milk of magnesia about 10-12 hours before your bowel program. Do your bowel care daily until this is resolved.

I spoke with my physician and he wanted me to take 10 ounces of magnesium citrate again. And finally the stars aligned and I was able to have a bowel movement. I will now take your advice on how to proceed while I'm still on the antibiotic.

I'm still struggling with having a bowel movement. My doctor wants me to take half of a dose of GaviLyte G. I was looking for some input as to when to drink it and have the effects kick in. I'm completely dependent for my bowel regimen. I would appreciate any advice.

Do you mean Golytely (PEG) which it is essentially the same as GaviLyte G? It is used for bowel preps before colonoscopy, etc. This is the same chemical as Miralax but more expensive and stronger. You can purchase Miralax over-the-counter and take it at bedtime daily (assuming you do morning bowel care). (KLD)

I haven't found Colace has any effect on me. I use olive oil for that purpose, about a 1/4 cup a day or so. But with 10 days of delay, that sounds dangerous I think. Lactulose is what finally worked for me.

Colace (DSS) is not a laxative. It is a stool softener. Be careful using oils like olive, castor, or mineral oil as they can interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (like vitamins A, D, and E).
