    Difficulty inserting foley

With the stone problem causing frequent foley changes, sometimes every few day, in the last 6-8 months I have had difficulty inserting a new one at times. I have used foleys for over 25 years without problems. $ or 5 times in the last few months, I have caused severe bleeding without making it into the bladder, ie make a false passage, hole. The bleeding goes on for a long time, near quart volume, before it finally stops about an hour into it. I KNOW, dangerous, but ya have to get that cath in there. I am almost a 90 minute drive at 75mph from BBRMC, the nearest place, and I am sure I know more than anyone there, as no specialists. I was wondering SCI NURSES, if this could possibly be a sign of prostrate problems. That is only thing I can think of that would cause it. Used to be an easy thing. As I have had the aforementioned 'mush' problem, I can't really tell, but there seems to be a solid object-surface I touch with my finger way up in there when I am trying to get the mush out. Don't know much about how far it would be nor if it would just be packed soft mush behind another sphincter.

    Hi Capn Gimp
Have you had a cystoscopy? to check the lining of your urethra to see if there are any strictures (blockages or narrow passageways)

Has the stone passed? or been removed?

Haven't had stones removed since about 2015 2016, used to get them removed every 2-3 years-laser lithotripsy. Never had cystoscopy. I have been a proflific stone maker since my sci began in 1996. They get to small egg size, normally two at a time. I went to a Dr about a week ago and he still has not made a uro appt. I live in the desert, off-grid and nearest hospital is 80 miles north of me and is not a major one with specialists. I have to go to El Paso for the stones. Hasn't done anything I asked except set a date for MRI of a non-malignant tumor inside left lobe of cerebellum. VERY hard to get anything done here.
I have been going through foleys avg 2/week. Sometimes more. Either they clog or stones bust the retention balloon. Been costly for me these past 5 years.I switched from a 14 fr silicone coated latex to a 16 french silicone about 6 months ago. That helped with clogging but they are hard to get inserted, hence the bleeding incidents. Have to fall back on the latex 14s when that happens for a week or so until it heals.

If I CAN get an appt,it would have to be in El Paso which is 5+ hrs away(closest) and hoping for stone removal which is MOST important of all my issues/potential issues, I KNOW thye are there.
Had to change bag and catheter about 2am earlier this am due to clogging. It was a 14fr sil coated latex, could NOT get 16fr silicone past about 1/3 way in. This within 3 days of last one, pus like material for days. We do NOT have real hospitals anywhere near here. Odessa would be 2nd but would have to drive even longer, I have my brother's house to stay at in El Paso.

I'm a T4 complete, I could saw myself in two with a chainsaw below my nipples and not feel a thing. I THINK it is a combination of the 'mush' stool consistency with slooow transit times, and when it clogs, I have no clue until I either get wet or feel my bladder jutting out on the surface of my abdomen. So everything is squeezed in. If I am 'empty' and all my pee is drained, I can get the 16fr silicone in if it is warm/flexible. Sometimes, when I am in bed, tossing from side to side evry few minutes from shoulder pain, the balloon will bust because of the stones. Then the catheter slides out and I discover it later on when I feel pee on the mattress, thank God for waterproof mattress covers. It's been a joy these last 4 or 5 years lol. I was trying to get appts set up when the covid fiasco started, AND I couldn't ride my handcycle under threat of arrest! They actually sat out at mailbox row watching for folks coming out to go somewhere deemed 'non-emergency'. Figured I had better stay at the hut for THEIR safety. I have the MRI appt on Monday, after I see that, THEN I will rattle their cage about the uro appt, bedside commode, peristeen system, cushion, etc. Unless you are getting prescriptions, shots or something similar, they act like they don't want to see you. They evn did a covid screen, temp check and gave me a mask before I could go in.Hard to believe there are folks that still believe the narrative, but, that's the times. EXACTLY why I moved off the grid 5 years ago.
