Can a c4/5 SCI person donate his Liver?

As the title stated. I'm a c4/5 complete. Can I be a living Liver donor? Will Autonomic Dysreflexia and occasionally Urinal Tract Infection be a problem?

More important that your SCI will be the health of your liver. Some medications that are frequently taken by people with SCI/D can damage the liver, and of course there are concerns if you are a heavy drinker. Of course you also have to be a tissue match with the recipient.

This is a much bigger surgery than a kidney donation, so my bigger concern related to your SCI/D would be your ability to get through the surgery without negative aspects of anesthesia and risks for respiratory complications (pneumonia, etc.) after surgery. AD should not be a problem as long as there is a plan pre-operatively for management of this due to surgical incision pain post-operatively.

I suggest you have a serious discussion about this with your primary care provider before making a decision to offer.

The SCI-Nurses are advanced practice nurses specializing in SCI/D care. They are available to answer questions, provide education, and make suggestions which you should always discuss with your physician/primary health care provider before implementing. Medical diagnosis is not provided, nor do the SCI-Nurses provide nursing or medical care through their responses on the CareCure forums.
