    impaction

When is constipation considered impaction and how can a SCI know when it has happened? Also can it affect bladder and cathing. As in cause increased bladder spasms and prevent the bladder from completely emptying with cathing?
    Thanks

Yes it can cause bladder problems including spasms, UTI and retention.
Don't wait for impaction- when it is difficult to come out-.Keep the bowel program going- daily or every other day and keep the stool firm, but not hard or loose.

yes you could be impacted higher. Give your self a fleets enema and take a laxative.

Yes it is! Max dose of docusate sodium can be 600 to 800 mg twice a day and with Senna. And of course diet, water intake etc...and Enemeez, or magic bullet to keep things emptying and not clogging up.

Wouldn't you want to advise this person to get results real soon, or get to the ER?
              Hi impactions are not cool.

k so finally had results tonight at 7 with the use of lax. Somewhat hard but definitely solid pieces. Does this mean that any impaction is cleared out?

I have just gone through a long constipation episode and my BP is kind of out of whack. According to my GI, who is not an SCI specialist but is a GI nonetheless, he told me that impaction signs are watery diarreah and a lump in the lower left side of the stomach, where the sigmoid is located and where according to him the impaction backs up. I am not too versed on this, but I would think you were constipated, perhaps not impacted.

Nonetheless, glad to see you got results. I got results tuesday, yesterday and today after two and a half weeks of fighting this. Now I will try to normalize my transit time and output. Best of luck.

Nothing in 3 days wouldn't concern me to the point of an ER trip, unless I had other symptoms that warranted it. The one time I've had trouble like this, it was 5 days without results, and taking a couple Senakot cleaned me out about 8-12 hours later.

It's all individual and relative, but I don't think someone needs to panic after 3 days. Constipation is not the same nor as immediately dangerous as impaction.

He needs to take a laxative( Magnesium Citrate) AND give himself a fleets enema- that's what the ER would do. Unless that doesn't work or he is having AD then he should handle it himself. And then get on a regular effective bowel program so this doesn't keep happening.
